Many things are true at once.I value self-discovery because I want to know the truth about myself and how the world actually works. My desire to uncover the truth has led me to explore yoga, dance, meditation, breathwork, and more recently, the therapeutic use of magic mushroom plant medicine. This inner quest continues to inspire me and helps me untangle from the trauma of my
past. Many things are true at once. Sometimes I don’t want to discover the truth, or feel deeply, or receive insights. Because what if they’re too big, too scary, or too inconvenient to act upon? Maybe deep breathing, meditation, movement, or journaling will reveal that my relationship has run its course, or that my career is slowly draining my vitality, or that my health is failing. So, what do you do
when self-discovery work shows you something uncomfortable? Managing uncomfortable truths:- Be self-compassionate and remember you are “in process.” When you’re in process, it’s not always clear whether its the beginning, middle, or end. "It’s going to be okay in the end, and if it’s not okay, it’s not the end." -- Anonymous
- Respect your courage and the honesty that comes through. You're willingness to feel is building strength. Awareness is the first step. Let
the insight simmer. Action doesn’t always have to follow immediately. Rest for a while in the knowing, decision-making will come at an appropriate time.
- Be willing to be okay with being uncomfortable. Developing an authentic relationship with yourself involves some level of discomfort, which is the fuel for growth. That is when self-compassion makes all the difference.
- Journal about the discomfort. You will rapidly move unsupportive thoughts and feelings from your head to the
page. Paper holds the energy rather than stuffing that emotion down in the body. Give it a safe place to land, out of your heart and head. Through love, even the most difficult experiences and sorrows can be transformed into something positive and healing.
