I want change, but wait! When movement toward change begins, it feels risky and unsettling. When I said yes to stepping outside of my comfort zone into a growth edge, my illusion of control dissolved and I felt ungrounded. I
knew in my head that embracing change would lead to learning more about myself, gaining wisdom and ultimately feeling more confident, but my nervous system began freaking out.
How to be with anxiety - Allow anxiety to be okay. Anxiety is part of the human experience. The amygdala, our brain's fear center, reacts to change as if it's an immediate threat. Notice that sudden surge of adrenaline that runs up the spine,
pause, and lengthen the next exhale to reassure yourself that gradual exposure, in small steps, to new experiences can soothe that fear response.
- Small doses of self-care. Micro meditations, micro movements and micro breathing practices of 1 to 5 minutes (repeated often) are quick and easy ways to efficiently turn anxiety down and return to a window of balance.
- Invite curiosity. Approach scary
changes with an open mind and be willing to explore new ideas and behaviors that just might work.
- Get Support. Ask someone who has lived experience to mentor you while you take your first tentative steps. (That's us!) 😃
- Celebrate small wins. You're usually further along than you realize. Celebrate your subtle progress. One small step at a time helps our brain associate change with growth rather
than danger.
