Rosa Parks didn’t refuse to give up her seat on an Alabama bus that fateful day in 1955 because she was tired. Quite the opposite: “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” she said of the stand she took against segregation, which resulted in her arrest. Rosa Parks took care of herself with the same discipline she applied to her civil rights activism. Born in 1913, she grew up in a family that valued physical and mental health. In
the photo above, taken in 1973, Parks is expertly executing the bow pose (Dhanurasana in Sanskrit, the language of yoga) clasping her ankles while raising her head and shoulders up. This pose cultivates courage by expanding the area of the heart and lungs. It stimulates the abdominal organs, digestive system and strengthens the back. It also effectively corrects bad posture. Yoga is a way to take care of our body, mind and spirit. It helps us to literally stand up straight and
strong while also helping us courageously stand up for our rights or take a stand by using our voice to advocate for fair treatment. Saturday, March 8th is International Women's Day. Let's honor her rich legacy of resistance against racial discrimination and injustice. Thank you, Rosa Parks for your example of taking a peaceful stand by remaining seated. |
