Awe and the Expanded States of Awareness Awe is a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. It is not intrinsically positive or negative, but a complex emotion connected to meaningful
experiences. You've probably experienced awe while taking in the panoramic view from a mountain peak, observing the slow, multicolored sunset, catching the majestic, graceful arc of a whale as it rises from the ocean, while witnessing a birth or sitting by a loved one as they pass. Awe helps us understand a sense of our small self. We gain a glimpse of something greater, both within and "out there". This reduces self-referential thinking and
rumination. It helps us cope with the immensity of reality. This might be why awe could be a useful tool in promoting mental wellness. Self-focus and rumination are the root of conditions like anxiety and depression, and experiencing awe can, in a way, expand our typical awareness and free the mind from some of our habitual limiting thoughts, said Dr. Dacher Keltner, the faculty director of the Greater Good Science Center and a psychology professor at UC
Berkeley. A huge piece of a psychedelic experience is this awe-inspiring oneness with all. The feeling of awe is similar to the feeling that psychedelics often initiate. Research is being conducted to study the experience of awe and to determine whether any of the same neurological biomarkers are present when people use psychedelics.
