Hi ,
Â
How do you know if you are in a natural process of spiritual emergence or if you are experiencing a spiritual emergency?
Â
Here is an explanation, along with a chart listing the differences between a spiritual emergence and an emergency.
Â
One of the primary indications that you are in the process of moving toward wholeness (in other words, an emergence) is your willingness to trust and cooperate with your inner process. Of course, knowing that it is a process, first of all, helps immensely and having information about it allows you to develop trust.Â
Â
A spiritual emergence is a movement toward a more expanded way of being. Most times, it is a gradual process of maturing as we come to understand ourselves and the world. The gradual approach includes enhanced emotional health, a sense of greater freedom and personal choice, and a deeper connection with others and appreciation of nature.
Â
Sometimes, though, it can happen suddenly through a wide spectrum of life experiences such as giving birth, a near death event, travel to another country with a very different culture, psychedelic medicines or a traumatic life crisis. If we are unaware of the fact that our lives can include physical emergencies, mental health crises as well as spiritual emergencies, it can propel us into unknown territory that can feel jarring and terrifying. A spiritual emergency can happen to anyone at
any age. Religious orientation has nothing to do with it. Whether a person is mentally well or unwell also seems to have no bearing.
Â
Indicators that point toward emergency:
- A desire to analyze what is happening
- Effort to be in control
- Need for certainty about the outcome
- Perception that external circumstances are happening to, rather than through you, and people or energies are manipulating you.
Spiritually transformative experiences can be extraordinarily growth promoting or extremely destabilizing. This chart can help you or a loved one figure out where you are and seek out a professional who is familiar with spiritual emergency, if needed.
